Jess Damery was the eighth child born to William and Mary (Coombs) Damery. In 1890 he was born in Douglas Township, Harrison County, Iowa. He attended school at Pleasant Valley, but had to quit at the end of eighth grade, due to the death of his father, so he could help with the farming.
In 1913, he married Ella Gutcher. They moved on the family farm at that time his mother and sisters moved to Woodbine.
Three children were born to Jess and Ella:
(1) Mary Damery married Floyd Haworth
(2) Lloyd Damery
(3) Harold Damery
Jess was truly a dedicated farmer. He farmed for 64 years, all but ten of them in Harrison County. Ella and Jess were members of the Methodist Church.
Ella's health failed in 1968, causing them to retire to Woodbine where she passed away in 1970. Jess lived alone most of his last nine years. He passed away in October of 1979 at 89 years of age.
