A graduate of Carnegie Tech and the Pennsylvania Military Academy, he served in the Navy during World War I first as an Enlisted man and later as an Ensign. After the war, he joined MGM Studios beginning his career as an Assistant Director and part time actor, later moving up to Director. He started directing small budget comedies for MGM and later Columbia Pictures. Eventually directing a total of 89 films. Some of his credits included "Partners in Crime", "Gorilla Ship", "The Vampire Bat" and many of the "Blondie and Dagwood" movies. In later years he turned to directing films with religious themes.
