Susanna was born in Boston, Lincolnshire, England, and travelled to the American colonies with her first husband Major William Whiting, sailing from London, England, to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1633. By 1636, Major Whiting assisted Thomas Hooker and congregation with their move to Hartford, CT by transporting supplies by his ship.

Susanna and William Whiting had 7 children:

  1. William Whiting Jr (c.1634-99),
  2. Rev John Whiting (1635-89; m S. Collins),
  3. Samuel Whiting (1636 child),
  4. Sarah Whiting (1637-1704; m J. Mygatt and J. King),
  5. Mary Whiting (1638-1709; m N. Collins),
  6. Joseph Whiting (1645?-1717; m A. Allyn)
  7. a son born after his father William Sr. died in 1647.

Susanna's husband William Whiting was a promoter of trade and commerce in Hartford, ran trading houses in several colonies, owned many land patents, and was considered one of the civil and religious Fathers of Connecticut. However, he died young in 1947, leaving Susanna a wealthy young widow. She had to sue usurpers in court to retain her property.

In 1650, Susanna (also known as Mary) married her second husband, widower Samuel Fitch (1626-59), another Englishman now living in Connecticut. They had a son:

  1. Thomas Fitch (1652-1704; m A. Stacey)

Samuel passed away in 1659, making Susanna a widow for the second time. Susanna married her 3rd husband, Alexander Bryan (1602-79), after his first wife Anne Baldwin Bryan passed away in 1661. Alexander was an English immigrant, a wealthy landowner and prominent shipowner. Susanna passed away in 1673, before her third husband Alexander Bryan died in 1679.

"Alexander Bryan, son of Thomas Bryan and Frances (Bowling) Bryan, was baptized in Aylesbury, Co. Bucks, England on 23 September 1602 and died in Milford, CT, on 20 November 1679. He married first in 1631 to Anne Baldwin, who was baptized March 1605/6 in North Church, Herts, England and died in Milford, CT on 20 February 1661 (daughter of Robert and Joanne Robinson Baldwin of North Church).

"He (Alexander Bryan) married next the widow Mrs. Susanna (__) Whiting Fitch, who was later buried in Middletown, CT on 8 July 1673; she was the widow of William Whiting and Samuel Fitch." [Families of Early Milford, p. 124]

According to this source, Susanna's maiden name was Wiggin. Another Whiting researcher found a source that her maiden name was Mygatt.
