John was born in Berkley, Ontario. After the death of his mother in 1907 his father moved out west near Watrous, Saskatchewan with him and his younger siblings. He later farmed in Robinhood, Saskatchewan, then he served in the 16/22nd Saskatchewan Horse, C.A.S.F. for two years during WWII. After the war he moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where he lived out the rest of his life.
