Lena Rose Nordstrom, 96, Hallock, Minn., died at Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center, Hallock, Jan. 27, 2011.
Lena Rose Paul was born July 4, 1914 at Joliette, N.D., the daughter of Raphael and Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Pelerine) Paul. She grew up near Joliette and attended school there.
Nov. 3, 1932 she married John Fitzpatrick at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Hallock. Together they farmed and began their family near St. Vincent, Minn. They were blessed with three daughters, Marlene and twins, Elaine and Alice.
In March of 1954 Elaine died in an automobile accident and in June of that same year, Alice, Marlene and Lena's husband, John, died in an accident while swimming in a pond on the family farm. Lena Rose was able to get through the tragedy with the help of her family, sister, Mary and brothers, Joe, Albert, Arthur and Frank. June 12, 1956 she found happiness again when she married Harold Nordstrom who had lost his wife and was raising his three year old son, John, alone.
The family moved to Berkley, Mich., where Lena Rose worked part-time and raised John. Harold died Sept. 2, 2005. She became a resident of Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center in 2010.
Lena Rose loved flowers and spent many hours outside her home tending the gardens and shrubs. She also enjoyed shopping, especially for shoes and clothes.
She is survived by a sister, Mary Degelder, Hallock, Minn.; and nieces, nephews and other extended family. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Joe, Albert, Arthur and Frank; and her step son, John.
Funeral services were Jan. 31, in St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Hallock. Interment was in St. Vincent Cemetery, St. Vincent, Minn. Rev. William DeCrans, presided; Sharlene Klegstad, organist.
Pall bearers were Carol Hoverson, Allan Paul, Barbara Roden, Jane Taylor, Art Degelder, Oscar Degelder, Betty Hartje, Loretta Gilleshammer, relatives and friends.
