Mary, was the 2nd wife to James Luther Hawkins. In the 1850 Census we find Mary about 2 years old living in the household of Alfred and Caroline (Collins) Alley in Randolph County, GA. They had married on 21 August 1845 in Randolph County, Georgia. Also living in the household were her 4 year old brother, John, and her baby sister, Martha A., born in 1850. According to the 1850 Census her father was a native of South Carolina and her mother a native of Georgia.

By 1860 we find this family living in Dale County, AL with Caroline-44 as head of household in the 1860 Census. Children listed were: John-14, Mary-12, Martha A.-10, James-7 and Nancy-5. Apparently, the move took place sometime between 1850 and 1860. We don't know if Alfred Alley made the journey or not, probably, he did and died sometime before the 1860 Census.

The wife of James Luther Hawkins, Mary Catherine (Kennedy) Hawkins died in 1867. By 1870, Mary J., had married James Luther Hawkins and in about 1870 they had their first child, Lula. By the 1880 Census they had added 4 more children to their household, John, Richard, Charles and Ann.
