Charles Joseph Crunican, son of Charles and Josephine, was born March 24, 1922, in Gaston. He graduated from Hayward Elementary and Hillsboro High schools. Charles joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and graduated Oct. 23, 1943, second lieutenant from Victorville (Calif.) Army Airfield as a bombardier. He flew in the first air raid over Germany during World War II with the 306th. Throughout the course of his 30-plus missions over Germany, he received the Air Medal with multiple Oak Leaf Clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Purple Heart.

In 1944 Charles married Anna Mae Wilson and, after the war, began a career in the timber industry in Oregon, working in Elkton, Timber, Port Orford, and Roseburg. He moved to the Portland area in 1965, working for Peerless, Fruehauf and Utility truck trailer builders as a machinist, Local 1005.

His hobbies included woodworking, welding, hunting, photography, and stained glass work, which he shared with his good friend, Eileen Whistler, in the later years.

Charles is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Micheal and Darlene Crunican of Vancouver; granddaughters, Ashleigh Crunican (Juan Carlos Romero) both teaching in Guatemala and Adrienne Rankin (Alexander) of Beaverton; sister, Frances Foster of Portland; and brothers, Mark of Beaverton and William of Cornelius.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Mae, in 1988; brother, Donald, who was killed in New Guinea during World War II; and sister, Tresa Rose Van Winkle.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2011, in Omega Funeral Home. Interment with military honors will be in Willamette National Cemetery.
