She married Hugh Smith Barnes of Palmetto, Georgia on Friday, April 18, 1941 at her family home in Atlanta. They later settled in Charlotte, NC where Catherine became a homemaker and mother. They had a marriage of 38 years and shared a deep love and respect for one another. She and Hugh were founding members of Park Road Baptist Church and were actively involved for many years. They also shared many hours playing bridge with a circle of close friends and Sunday afternoons on the lake in Hugh's handcrafted boat. After Hugh's passing in 1979, Catherine became an active volunteer with the American Red Cross and Carolinas Medical Center. She was recognized by Carolinas Medical Center for her 16 years of service, with 4, 678.4 hours spent assisting family members in the Surgical Intensive Care Waiting unit. The volunteer staff remembers Catherine as one of their most loyal, wonderful, and dedicated volunteers, stating "it's rare you have someone come every week without fail and with such enthusiasm." Catherine moved to Raleigh in 1999 living in an apartment until her move to the Rex Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center in July 2004. She had discovered her talent for art while participating in classes at the YWCA in Charlotte, continuing after her move to Raleigh, most recently at the arts and crafts program at Rex Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center in Raleigh. Her photo features one of the hats she designed.
Catherine was an incredible woman, gentle and kind, but also very spunky with a sharp sense of humor. She faced several health challenges in her later years, and she faced each without complaint, but with grace, strength, determination, and of course her sense of humor. She enjoyed spending time with her family and many friends. She also enjoyed spicy foods and a good margarita on occasion.
She is survived by her daughters, Elaine McElheney of Charlotte and Nell G. Barnes of Raleigh; her grandchildren, Catherine Hope Anderson of Raleigh and Eric Christopher Smith of Charlotte.
Her family is grateful for each moment they were able to share with her, and she will be missed beyond anything words could express.
