Civil War Union Major General. A Seminole and Mexican War veteran, General Ord was a very successful and competent combat leader for the Union. He was present at the Capture of John Brown at Harper's Ferry in 1859, defeated Jeb Stuart at the Battle of Dranesville (May 3, 1862), and defeated Confederate forces under General Earl Van Dorn at the Battle of Cornith. He commanded troops in the Vicksburg campaign under US Grant, fought in the Shenandoah and assumed command of the Army of the James in 1865. He lead that Army in the campaigns that culminated in the Confederate surrender at Appomattox. Fort Ord (in California) is named for him.
