Barbara was the youngest child of Valentine Heidenfelder and Annie Beste. Valentine and Annie separated when Barbara was under 6 years old, and she and her three sisters lived for a period of time at St. John's Orphanage in Belleville. Later, she is found living in Chicago with her mother. Her 3 sisters also lived in Chicago and they are said to have been members of an all-woman band in Chicago.
