Charlotte Jean Spear, 78, great-granddaughter of early Oregon pioneers, passed away Jan. 26, 2011, after an extended illness. As a former Queen of the Bethel, a passionate 4-H member who won awards in horticulture, and a skilled seamstress who won awards in the state fair, Charlotte continued to practice her skills throughout life. After graduating from Monmouth College of Education and doing her post-graduate degree work at the University of Oregon, Charlotte taught and served in the Portland Public Schools until she retired with 40 years of service. In her later years, she traveled by trailer on a tour of the continental United States, and spent time growing trees with her husband on the family farm in Yamhill. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Stuart L. Spear; son, Steve, his wife, Radhi Spear, and their daughters, Sharon and Karen; and her daughter, Mary Smith and her husband, Marvin Smith. Those wishing to attend the memorial should visit the Willamette National Cemetery administration office at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2011. In lieu of flowers, please send a contribution to your favorite charity.
