William S. Cannon was born in Gaston County on September 25, 1835. He enlisted in Company C, 1st Artillery, 10th Regiment, NC State Troops on May 14, 1862 for Civil War service. He was captured at Greencastle, Pennsylvania on July 5, 1863 and imprisoned at Point Lookout, Maryland until he was exchanged February 18, 1865. He was stationed at Camp Lee, near Richmond, Va., after he was exchanged. After the close of the War, he returned home to Gaston County and died on February 27, 1918 at the age of 82.
