Cause of death: Heroin overdose caused by her then boyfriend. He allegedly injected her with the lethal dose. Homicide investigation is ongoing.

Cheboygan County-Sheriff Dale Clarmont stated his department was dispatched to Cheboygan Memorial Hospital Emergency Department on January 29, 2011 at 5:49 am on the report of a suspicious death.

Sheriff Clarmont stated that the responding deputies were advised by hospital staff that an unknown male subject had brought a female subject to the Emergency Department of the hospital and then had fled the scene without identifying himself or the victim.

Through investigation the female was later identified as Heather Louise Wright, 31 YOA, from Cheboygan.

Sheriff Clarmont said "The investigation turned into a homicide investigation after detectives conferred with Cheboygan County Medical Examiner, Dr. Donald Ramsay and a forensic autopsy at Spectrum Hospital, in Grand Rapids revealed that Wright died of a heroin drug overdose".

Sheriff Clarmont said deputies executed search warrants at 2 separate residences over the weekend where additional evidence of the homicide and illegal drug use was confiscated. "The continuing investigation has led to the arrest of several local and out-of-area subjects with more arrests and additional charges anticipated" said Clarmont.

Clarmont also stated that due to the investigation four minor children, ranging in age from 10 years to 6 months old have been taken into protective custody by the Department of Humans Services, Children Protective Services Division and placed into temporary foster care by the Cheboygan Family Court, a division of the 53rd Circuit Court. Detectives with the Cheboygan County Sheriff Department with collaboration from the Cheboygan County Prosecutor's Office and the Straits Area Narcotics Enforcement team (SANE) were able to obtain the following charges.

Sheriff Clarmont reiterated, "Although the detectives did great police work in solving this and arresting those responsible in a very timely manner; this is another tragic example of drug abuse and illegal activities resulting not only in an unnecessary and untimely death but the displacement of minor children, two of whom have now lost their mother."

Under Michigan Law, individuals participating in or contributing to illegal drug use which results in a death can be charged with Delivery of a Controlled Substance Causing Death which is a life felony.
