Thomas Alexander Brooks Boyd was born about 1813, the son of George and Harriet (Johnson) Boyd and nephew of First Lady Louisa (Johnson) Adams.
In August, 1814, his father was intrusted with private dispatches to the peace commissioners at Ghent and remained in France until the spring of 1815.
In December, 1818, his father received the appointment of Indian agent at what was then called Michillimackinac. He left for his post early in 1819 and returned to take his wife and four children, to Mackinaw, Michigan Territory in the spring of 1820 when Thomas was about 7 or 8 years old. Thomas grew up at Mackinaw and his parents remained there until 1832 when his father was transferred to the Green Bay agency. Thomas would have been about 19 at that time.
Thomas eventually became an Indian agent at Prairie du Chien where he was living by 1838. He later entered the mercantile business at Savanna, Illinois.
Thomas A. B. Boyd died on October 9, 1854 at Detroit from cholera, while on his way home from New York. He was buried in Elmwood Cemetery at Detroit.

Thomas was the father of Hattie, Mary, Charles, Virginia, Florida and Thomas.
