Obituary of Samuel Lindsay
Samuel Ebenezer Lindsay was born on the original Lindsay homestead near Birmingham, Iowa, on May 21, 1864. On March 25, 1931 he suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he never recovered and on the morning of June 3, 1931, his spirit returned to his Maker and life passed from his body at the age of 67 years and 12 days.
On October 16, 1889, he was married to Mary Brown, and to this union were born three sons: Rex, Samuel and Lester and four daughters: Helen, Ethel, Lulu and Alma. three sisters, Mary Ellen, Anna and Clara, together with the widow, the seven children and eight granddaughters, are left to mourn the loss of his fellowship.
He was left fatherless at the age of two years and in his life has met many of the trials and discouragements of this world. Practically his entire life was spent on the same farm. Brought up in a Christian home he was a faithful member and leader for many years of the United Presbyterian church in Birmingham founded by his grandfather nearly 100 years ago, and since its merger, with the Presbyterian church, he has been one of the leaders in its growth. Firm and sincere in all his beliefs on religious, political and economic questions, but always a sympathetic toward his fellowmen, he has been a power in the community and enjoyed the respect of all.
We cannot know that knowledge he has today of any tributes we may pay him, but we think he proudly looks down from his heavenly home, seeing none of the material things, but feeling that his work has been well done, and that among those left behind are many living memorials strengthened by his ideals. Faithful servant we bid you goodbye till we meet again.
"Life's work well done, Life's race well won, Life's work well done, Then comes rest."
The funeral service was held in the Presbyterian church at 10:00 a.m. in charge of pastor, Rev. H. C. Irvine. Pallbearers were members of the Men's Adult class of the Sunday school, of which he has been teacher for quite a number of years. Interment in the Maple Hill cemetery.
