Louis Paul Diaz was the first born son of Luis and Josephine Gracida Diaz. Luis and Josephine were born in Spain and Mexico respectively, making Louis the first American born member of their family. Louis inherited his father's work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit and his mother's cooking skills.

In the 1950's Louis opened his first Mexican restaurant in San Rafael on Fourth Street. A few years later he moved his culinary expertise to Berkeley Ca., near the North Gate of the Cal Berkeley campus where the Mexican Patio became a campus favorite.

Louis was a real people person, never met a stranger, and was loved and respected by everyone who ever met him, whether they be family, friends, business associates or customers. He was a very giving warm and generous human being, who would literally give you the shirt off his back if you needed it.

Louis served his county during WWII. He was a SGT serving in some of the hotspots throughout the South Pacific. Louis also played exhibition basketball games for the Army during R&R, and held the high scoring record for many years. He was offered a contract to play professionally but back in the 40's he could make more money working a regular job; and since he married and started a family in 1947, income was important. He did however have his own semi-pro team that played throughout the Bay Area.

Louis married Mary McCarthy in 1947 and they had five children, Judy, Nancy, David, Paul and Phillip. He was a warm, loving, caring and devoted father. He also took a number of nieces and nephews under his wing, and helped a number of family financially when needed.

His children were his pride and joy and when his first grandchild was born you would have thought she was the first ever: he literally adored her, and the adoration was returned. His last conversation was about her upcoming first birthday. Louis suffered a massive heart attack at work and died at the young age of 47. He is still missed every day.
