Private in Col. Elliott's Regiment 1776 ("Spirit of '76" Records for Rhode Island) with his brother Joseph.

James (6th) is the son of James Cudworth (5th) and Anna Bryant. He wasn't born in Freetown, MA, and he wasn't born in Oxford, MA, so he may have been born between the two. [His birth is not listed in records for either town.]

James and his brother Joseph served in the Spirit of '76 with Rhode Island forces. After the Revolution, James married Hannah Brown (marriage intentions published 2 Mar 1781 in Oxford, MA). He appears on the census there through 1800 and on the census in Oppenheim, NY for 1810.

James' daughter Abigail Cudworth (married William Wight) is said to be born in Centerville, NY in 1787, but that's impossible because Centerville was not settled until 1808. She was likely born in Massachusetts or Oppenheim, NY.

James' brother-in-law, Andrew Brown of Woodstock, CT, set out for a trip to New York State 27 Aug 1799, but his family diary does not mention particulars about his journey nor about his sister Hannah's family. Andrew was likely curious about his sister's new homestead in Oppenheim or wanted to visit her if she were ill.

*James' brother Joseph is likely to have moved to Oppenheim with him. According to the History and Genealogy of James Cudworth... written and researched by John W. Calder, Joseph is the father of Joseph b. 1781 who moved to Centerville. Grace Cudworth (my great-great aunt) assisted in the research, but no documentation survives. Without any sign of Joseph after the revolution, it seems likely that James J. Cudworth may have fathered Abigail and Joseph. Both moved to Centerville, NY. Collaboration on any/all details is welcome.
