Civil War Union Brigadier General. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1856 and was appointed an officer in the Corps of Topographical Engineers. At the start of the Civil War, he became one of Major General George B. McClellan's principal subordinates and was promoted Colonel of the 2nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry in September 1861. He participated in the Peninsular Campaign, 2nd Bull Run and Fredericksburg. Promoted to Brigadier General, US Volunteers in November 1862, during 1863 he served as Chief Engineer of the XXIII Corps and was responsible for the defenses to repel the Confederates at Knoxville. Major General William T. Sherman, appointed him Chief Engineer Division of Mississippi, rendering services in the Atlanta Campaign, Carolinas Campaign and he was brevetted Brigadier General US Army at the war's end. After the war, he served as aide-de-camp to General Sherman and had a distinguished peacetime career as a military engineer until he retired in 1888.
