He first married Martha Bowen. I have never found any definite info on her other than according to census records she was originally from Alabama and was told she was buried at Wilkes Cemetery in Laurens County, GA. If so, her grave is now unmarked. John & Martha had 9 children - Sofronia Henry, Louiza Henry, Alexander Stephen Henry, Nancy Henry, John William Henry, Laura Henry (Hudson), James Lewis Henry, George Thomas Henry and Nathaniel Thaddeus "Tobe" Henry. Laura was born in Alabama in 1852 according to census records. Martha died due to the birth of Nathaniel around Feb 23, 1862. They lived in Laurens County, with land adjoining the Branch family land.
1850 census has him in Randolph county, GA
1860 in Laurens county, GA
1870 in Montgomery county, GA
1880 in Emanuel county, GA
The 1880 census is the only one that list his parents place of birth - Father - Virginia Mother - South Carolina
All census records show him as being born in GA. but, one of his sons death certificates says he was born in Alabama.
On May 11, 1862, John Emmett married Rachel Branch, daughter of David Branch and Charity Hagen Branch. Rachel had 3 illegitimate daughters that she brought to the marriage - Nancy, Annie Eliza and Charity. Their father was supposed to be Rev. John "Pappy" Wilkes, so named due to the number of children he fathered. It is said that the girls, when younger, went by whichever last name suited them, either Branch or Wilkes. Pappy married Rachel's younger sister Charity "Oud" Branch. Pappy's brother David married Rachel's older sister, Martha Patricia "Pattie" Branch.
John Emmett and Rachel had 2 children of their own, Tabitha "Dule" Henry, born abt 1863-64 and Francis Marion "Buddy" Henry, Mar. 27, 1866 - Jan. 29, 1941.
I have seen that Dule, around the age of 14, had an illegitimate daughter named Martha. In the 1880 census, Dule is still living with her parents as is Martha.
John Emmett's oldest son, Alexander Stephen Henry married Nancy Branch, Rachel Branch's daughter.
Alexander and Nancy are my GG Grandparents.
I have never been able to find any other information on John Emmett Henry - no place of birth, no parents or siblings. I am always hoping that sometime, somewhere and somehow, that I will get the break I have been seeking for so long and will finally be able to learn more about him.
