U.S. Senator. Always noted as a very able woman, she graduated from the University of Nebraska, in 1908, was a high school teacher of mathematics, plus principal of high schools in Papillion, Ashland and Crete, Nebraska, (1908-16). In addition, she was president of her husband’s Abel Construction Company, (1937-52), chairwoman of the board of directors of Abel Investment Company, (1952-53) and vice chairwoman of the Nebraska State Republican Central Committee in 1954. On November 2, 1954, she was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Dwight Griswold and served until her resignation on December 31, 1954. She was a delegate to White House Conference on Education in 1955, chairwoman of Nebraska delegation to the Republican National Convention in 1956 and a member of the Theodore Roosevelt Centennial Commission, (1955-59). She was then chairwoman on the board of trustees, Doane College and a member on board of the trustees of Nebraska Wesleyan College, until her death at age 78.
