Family folklore says that Daniel was a wealthy, successful farmer in Texas. Listed as a widower on his death certificate, Daniel M. Maples had been married three times. His first wife, Nancy Naugher, was the mother of his first three children: William, James and Lena. Nancy died in childbirth with Lena or shortly thereafter. Daniel's second wife, Martha Naugher, was Nancy's youngest sister. Together Daniel and Martha, also called Callie, were the parents of Annie (also called Nanie), Daniel L., Fred, and Ollie (female). Martha died within three years of Ollie's birth. Daniel's third wife was also named Nancy; the time of her death is unknown. It is also unknown whether they had children together.

Although Daniel's death certificate indicates his place of burial as Perryman Cemetery, volunteers have searched the entire cemetery and found no headstone.
