Vernon Berger, a longtime Cleveland resident, passed away on February 6, 2011 at his home in Cleveland at the age of 87. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 12, 2011 at the Church of Christ in Cleveland. Mr. Doug Dingley will officiate. Interment will follow at Woodland Cemetery in Cleveland. Visitation will be held on Friday from Noon to 3 p.m. at the Church of Christ in Cleveland. Arrangements are entrusted to Palmer Marler Funeral Home, Cushing. Vernon was born on January 20, 1924 in Ralston, Oklahoma. He grew up and attended school in Jennings and Hallett, graduating from Hallett High School in 1942. Vernon married the love of his life, Norma Irene Vaughan on October 6, 1942 in Cleveland. Their first child, Bryce, was born on their first anniversary. They moved to northern California in Arcata in 1946, where they made their home. They owned and operated the Seeley and Titlow Feed and Seed in Arcata and the V and N Burger Bar from 1964 until their retirement in 1980. They were members of the Eureka Church of Christ, and also served as an Elder. Vernon enjoyed bowling and was on many a league. In his younger years, he was very active in softball, basketball and horse shoes. They enjoyed traveling in their fifth wheel through the east coast. He liked to work outside and also going trout fishing. After their retirement in 1980, they moved back to Cleveland, to be near their children. Vernon is survived by his sons Bryce Berger and wife Sue Ann of Cleveland, David Berger of Cleveland, daughters Donna House and husband Corky of Cleveland, Barbara Turner of Yale, sisters Vona West of California and Velma Van Hoy of Pawnee, grandchildren Ted and Mindy Berger, Denise Berger, Christina Winikoff, Lynette Basnett, Renee Berger, Tara Berger, Tonya and Steven Risewick, Jason and Shari Paul, and eight great grandchildren. Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Norma Berger, sister Vera Geyer, brother Frank Berger, brothers-in-law Walt West and Kenneth Van Hoy, son-in-law Frank Turner.
