According to "This Paradise We Call Home," James and his brother William came to California about 1860 from their native England, by way of Canada, Ohio and Illinois. James and his wife Joanna were elderly by the time they reached the Paradise Ridge. Two daughters stayed behind in the Midwest with their husbands and children. Two married daughters and families had come to California with the Dressers, Harriet Hudson and Charlotte Sutphen. The weather was not kind to the Dresser's little farm. The fruit trees and vines froze; the rain held back too long to revive them. The extended family packed up in discouragement and moved to Sutter County where James passed away in 1869.
