Death of Mrs. Penland

The death of Mrs. Mary A. Penland which occurred Tuesday morning, November 30th ended the material existence of a beautiful life.

Mrs. Penland was the mother of Mrs. Lindley Owens of this place. She came to spend the winter with her daughter. Mrs. Penland was in good health for a lady of 88 years and maintained her keen mental faculties until death. She was vivacious until a streak of paralysis took possession of her heart and ended her life in 30 minutes after she first became aware of the ailment.

She was the mother of eight children by her first marriage and mothered the children of her second husband which were three.

Mrs. Penland was a very abnormal woman in every respect. Few people in this community knew here but those who did readily appreciated her great and many virtues.

Funeral services were in charge of Revs. Ira C. Johnson and Henry Pickett. Interment was made at Popular Run Cemetery.

Mary A. Penland was born May 22nd, 1832. Departed this life Nov. 30th, 1920. Aged 88 years, 7 months and 8 days.

Mary A. Penland was born in Henry County, Indiana, was converted near the year 1844, joined the M. E. Church in the year 1849, was united in marriage with David W. Carey in the year 1851. To this union was born eight children, six of whom lived to man and womanhood, one daughter having deceased at the age of 24 years leaving an only son.

After living happily together for 18 short years her husband was torn from her by the relentless hand of death. After the death of her husband she bravely assumed the duties of both mother and father that are incident to the training of the physical and spiritual welfare of a well ordered family.

In the year of 1875 occurred her second marriage being united to Hiram F. Penland on the 10th day of July of the year named, they having resided in Greentown, Indiana during their married life until very recently on account of the failing health of both husband and wife she came to reside with her daughters Mrs. Savila Owens of Lynn, Indiana and Mrs. Mattie Lamb of Modoc, Indiana.

Ongoing into the home of Hiram F. Penland she assumed the care and welcomed to her heart the children of her husband, and because of her kindness, love and care of them when they could not care for themselves they now rise up and call her blessed. In speaking of her conversation in after life she was made to exclaim, "The Grace of God has sustained me ever since, for which I praise his holy name and am waiting for his call".

Dearest Mother we have laid thee,

In the peaceful Graves embrace,

But thy Memory will be cherished,

Till we see thy Heavenly Face.
