In the Mississippi 1860 the census it shows him living in Newton County, Mississippi with his wife, Mary Mildred Rowzee. He enlisted on April 26, 1862, in Decatur, Mississippi for a period of three years. He was in the 39th Mississippi Infantry, Company D. AKA as the "Newton Hornets" (raised in Newton County, Mississippi). He and his wife, Mary Mildred Rowzee Adams, had one child, Joseph and he is in the 1870 Census living with his Grandmother, Louisa Cleveland Rowzee Johnston, age 9. David is listed in the Addendum in the Official Report of his Brigade Commander, Brig. Claudius Sears. This addendum is titled "Foremost Among the Forlorn Hope." It is a "report of the Offices and Men of Sears' Brigade who reached the Main Line of the Enemy's works at Franklin November 30, 1864." 39 members of the 39th Mississippi Infantry are listed and six are listed as killed or mortally wounded on the enemy's breastworks, with David being among them.
