The Underbelly-style murder of elderly Leppington couple Anthony and Frances Perish in 1993 is now part of one of NSW's biggest murder investigations.
Following the arrest of their grandson Anthony John Michael Perish, 39, of Hoxton Park, and Sean Laurence Waygood, 38, of Merewether, last Tuesday, police believe they are closer to unravelling a number of unsolved murders and attempted murders.
The two men were charged with allegedly conspiring to murder prisoner Terry Falconer, abducted by men posing to be detectives while on work release at an Ingleburn smash repairs on November 16, 2001.
Falconer's dismembered body was found in several garbage bins on the banks of the Hastings River at Wauchope 10 days later.
He was killed before he was to appear at an inquest into the death of Perish's grandparents, Anthony, 91, and Frances, 93, who were shot outside their Byron Rd home at Leppington on June 14, 1993. Their bodies were found neatly placed on single beds with the home set alight.
This week a former neighbour, who did not wished to be named, told the Leader the murder of the pair was "a senseless tragedy".
"They were the nicest people in the area," she said.
"They were a lovely and generous couple, and we were in deep shock when we heard they had been killed."
Police said the unsolved murder of Perish's grandparents was part of a wider investigation including the suspected murder of Ian Draper, last seen leaving the Mt Pritchard Community Centre on August 3, 2001.
Draper's white Ford sedan with NSW registration plates ACD 45Q was later found abandoned on Bringelly Rd at Leppington.
Police are offering $200,000 for information leading to a conviction of Falconer's murder and $100,000 for the suspected murder of Draper.
Strike Force Tuno 2 commander Det Insp Gary Jubelin said while there had been two arrests, police believe more suspects are involved in the murders.
"This is a very complex investigation," he said.
