Mercer is one of the triplets born on Washington's birthday during the first presidents administration. President Washington asked and was awarded the honor of naming the boys, Warren, Montgomery and Mercer, Mrs. Sayre's father. President Washington conferred on each a remembrance of $50.00.MERCER SAYRE (son of Samuel and Lydia (Simpson) Sayre) was one of triplets, born in Lodi, New York, 26 February 1794 and named by George Washington. Mercer Sayre married in April 1817 MARGARET WINGET who was born 23 October 1798, daughter of William and Nancy (Hampton) Winget. William Winget was born 29 September 1769 and died 26 October 1841. Nancy Hampton was born 24 August 1768 and died 13 April 1844. She was English, descending from Lord Hampton. The surname has been carried in the records of Sayre descendants as "Margret Winget" "Margaret Wingate," and "Margaret Wingert." Mercer and Margaret Sayre lived in Monroe County, Ohio in 1830. They moved to Tyler County, (West) Virginia about 1839. He was a shoemaker. Margaret died 10 January 1849. Children listed in the household in Tyler County indicate five sons and four daughters. In the 1850 Virginia Census, Mercer Sayre lived with Serena Sayre. In the 1860 Virginia Census, Mercer was found in Wetzel County with Serena Sayre, and Amanda Kelley, 34 with Harvey B. Kelley, 23, grocer; and Phebe A. Kelley, 15, domestic. Mercer Sayre died 4 September 1879. Children:
1. NARCISSUS SAYRE, born 5 July 1819-1848; married 1838 AURSA SQUIRED.
2. CYRENA SAYRE, born 18 December 1820. She never married. She died 15 March 1914 at age 93-3-2, at the home of Dennis VanDyke.
3. MALCINA SAYRE, born 23 October 1822; married 1st, 23 January 1840 ABRAHAM R. VAN DYKE. The Tyler County 1850 Virginia Census found them on 30 August, with a son and two daughters in District #61. They moved to Mystic, Iowa in the 1850's, a town in which they helped develop. After Mr.VanDyke died, she married 2nd, in October 1885 DAVID BROWN. She died 4 November 1913. Children: Dennis VanDyke, Charity VanDyke, Mary Jane VanDyke, and Senora VanDyke.
4. AMINDA SAYRE, born 11 October 1824 Ohio; married 21 May 1843 EDWARD BARRETT KELLY. He was born 30 November 1816 and died about 1844 probably in Pennsylvania. Aminda died 11 May 1885 in Wetzel County, West Virginia. Child:
5. WILLIAM WESLEY SAYRE married 1st, LAURA SANFORD; 2nd, MARY RINE; and 3rd, MARGARET WYCOFF.+
6. MARTHA WASHINGTON SAYRE,
born 18 January 1829 in Ohio
7. LOUISE "KATHERINE" SAYRE, 18 Jan 1829
8. MARGARET WINGATE SAYRE, 18 Jan 1829
Family tradition has passed down information that these triplets (daughters 6-8) were named by Louise Catherine Adams, wife of President John Q. Adams. One branch of the family believed that all three were killed by a bolt of lightning while standing in an open doorway during a storm. Unless there was another "Katherine" born, this must be incorrect. A bible presented to Malcina from Katherine in 1872 and several letters from her were treasured keepsakes in the VanDyke family.
9. SYLVESTER P. SAYRE, born 18 February 1831 Woodsfield, Monroe, Ohio. He was listed in the Wetzel County 1880 West Virginia Census as a carpenter, with wife, M. J. Sayre, born about 1836 in Virginia. He may have died in the state of Georgia.
10. ISRAEL "ELDRIDGE" SAYRE, born 30 April 1833 Ohio; died 16 November 1892 in Medford, Oregon. He lived in Bloomfield, Davis, Iowa in 1860 and his occupation was painter.
