Leland George Brooks 1913 ~ 2007
Leland George (Pony) Brooks passed away March 18, 2007, Sandy, Utah. He was born May 11, 1913, to George Jr. and Flora Morris Brooks, in St. George, Utah. He loved sports, BYU and St. George.

He married Louisiana (Anna Lou) Peterson Brooks February 4, 1939. Anna Lou's father later solemnized their marriage in the Manti Temple. They met while both were teaching High School in Mesquite, Nevada.
Leland graduated from Brigham Young University with a Masters Degree. Leland was on the track team at BYU. He won regional and national NCAA running titles. He taught sports, mathematics and coached at Lincoln High School, Orem, Utah. He sold Oldsmobile's at Wasden Motors/ Tribe Motors/ Morris Motors for 30 years. He was a top salesman in the region and won many awards. He entered the Real Estate profession and continued to sell Oldsmobile's in 1980.

Leland and Anna Lou lived in Provo and Springdell, Provo Canyon. Leland served as the mayor of Springdell. Anna Lou passed away May 6, 1989. He married Constance Draper in September 1989.

Leland as a young man was a sports legend in the St. George area in basketball, football, track, and baseball. He played minor league baseball in Provo. He later became known for his refereeing in high school, college, and pro basketball and football. He was inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame in 2006 for Officiating. Leland served a mission to New England in 1932-1934. One of his greatest accomplishments was when he was the top LDS Church magazine ward salesman in the region.

Leland loved reading the scriptures and served in many Church callings, Sunday School Coordinator, Young Men's President, Bishopric Member, and High Counselor. He served as a coach in many wards and loved coaching young men in sports.

He is survived by Jeffrey Lee (Shawna) Brooks (Phoenix); Sue Ann (Jerry) Hill (Provo); Linda Lou (Merrill) Nelson (Sandy); Chris Gregory Brooks (Orem); and son-in-law Joseph Arlen (Norma) Jenkins (Provo); sister Maggie Stucki (St. George); Emily Pope (Logan); Olive (Spencer) Esplin (St. George); Flora McMullin, and brother Waldo Brooks (Cerritos, CA); 19 grandchildren, and 29 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Anna Lou Peterson Brooks, a daughter Teena Brooks Jenkins, brother Morris Brooks, sisters Anna Taylor, and Helen Anderson.
Graveside services will be held Thurs., March 22, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Eastlawn Memorial Hills Cemetery, 4800 N. 650 E., Provo. Friends may call Berg Mortuary, 185 E. Center St., Provo Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m.
