The paddle-steamer, Americus, owned by William "Boss" Tweed (Tammany Hall), was making its way along the river when it struck the Selleck craft, tossing all but four of the students into the water. One of the students, Eddie Morris (FAG #85669882) of Troy, NY, was a strong swimmer, but knew many of his friends could not swim at all. While attempting to lift Charlie into the grasp of those still in the boat, the pilot of the Americus restarted the engine. On its first rotation, the paddle struck Eddie in the head, killing him instantly. Charlie drowned along with another classmate, Willie Crane (FAG #85694696) of Somers, NY.
All three students are memorialized in stained glass windows in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Winona, MN.
