Captain Gatlin was a twenty four year old single physician from Okolona, Mississippi who first served in the Mississippi State Militia in 1860-61. He enlisted in Co. E. 11th Mississippi Infantry on May 1, 1861. At the regiment's reorganization he was dropped from command. In July 1862 he enlisted into the 41st Mississippi Infantry. He was elected Captain of Company L. as "all other senior officers waived their rights" to command. He was wounded at Chickamauga, Georgia on September 20, 1863. He was sent home to recuperate from a Confederate Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia on October 14, 1863. He returned to his unit in January, 1864. Mortally wounded in the lungs while acting Major of his regiment on November 30th he died in a Confederate Hospital in Franklin in December, 1864.
