William M. Chaney Sr.

William M. Chaney Sr., 79, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at ManorCare Health Services. He was a resident of Indianapolis.

He was born July 22, 1922, in Somerset, Ky. His parents were William A. and Eva M. (Calhoun) Chaney. He married Mae Marie (Smith) Chaney on Dec. 1, 1945, in Meece, Ky. She preceded him in death June 13, 1998. Survivors include a friend and companion, Ruth Adams; a son, William Marshal Chaney II of Greenwood; two daughters, Berneta Warner and Janet S. Warner, both of Greenwood; two brothers, Eugene Chaney of Indianapolis and the Rev. Gordon R. Chaney of King's Mountain, Ky.; five sisters, Edna Burch Johnson of Spencer, Pauline Dodd of Corbin, Ky., Christine Hail of Somerset, Ky., Josephine Preston of Kentucky and Shirley Muse of Indianapolis; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Amos Chaney Jr.; and a sister, Beverly Joyce Chaney.

He was employed by Metro Bus Co. as a driver for 10 years, retiring in 1984. He was previously employed by Associate Transport as a driver for 15 years and by General Outdoor Advertising Co. as a bill poster for nine years.

He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, 1st Marine Division Association, Dr. Worthington Chapter 3 Disabled American Veterans, Citizens Flag Alliance, National Rifle Association, Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, Irvington-Lawrence Chapter 158 York Rite of Indiana and Voiture Locale 145 40 & 8. He was a life member of 1st Infantry Division, 37th Division Veterans Association, American Division Veterans Association, Beech Grove American Legion Post 276, Guadalcanal Campaign Veterans, U.S. Army Noncommissioned Officer Association, Beech Grove VFW Post 1899 and Murat Shrine National Association Legions of Honor. He was former president and treasurer of AFL-CIO Local 7.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Infantry in the South Pacific theater under Admiral Nimitz.

The Revs. Kenny Taylor and Jason Warner will conduct a service at 7 tonight at Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center in Indianapolis. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until time of service today at the mortuary. The Revs. Gordon R. Chaney, Jason Warner, Michael Hail and J.E. Hail will conduct a service at 10 a.m. Friday (Johnson County time) at Morris and Hislope Funeral Home in Science Hill, Ky. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday (Johnson County time) at Morris and Hislope Funeral Home. Burial will be at Mills Spring National Cemetery in Nancy, Ky.
