Herbert L. Anderson, age 86, of La Farge, passed away on January 29, 2011, at Vernon Manor in Viroqua. His daughters, Ellen and Lynn, were there to love him and say goodbye.
Herbert was born in Viroqua on September 4, 1924, the son of Sverre (Sam) and Oline (Nordlie) Anderson.
He grew up in Viroqua and had memories from his childhood of earning money by mowing lawns, shining shoes at the barber shop, selling watermelons from his wagon, and caring for horses at the fairgrounds.
Herbert married Florine Bailey on September 21, 1942. Soon after that he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. Prior to Herbert's World War II deployment to England, Florine followed him as he was trained at state-side Army camps.
In the summer of 1943 he received his training as a Medic at Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Aurora, Colorado. In September he joined the newly-formed 452nd Bombardment Group at Camp Rapid in Rapid City, South Dakota.
The next assignments were to Pendleton Field, Oregon and Walla Walla, Washington. In Walla Walla the couple's first daughter, Ellen, was born in November, just weeks before Herbert left for England.
Herbert served as a Medic at Deopham Green Air Base, England from January 1943 to the end of the war. He attained the rank of PFC.
After the war, in 1946, their second daughter, Lynn, was born in Milwaukee. Herbert's working years were full of new ventures. He used his GI Bill to train as a funeral director.
At Harley Davidson he filled the dual roles of Safety Director and Assistant Personnel Director. At Globe Union, he was a machinist and when not working on battery parts and tools, his line made Globe Roller Skates.
When he worked at Allen-Bradley, the family lived in the room behind a sweet shop. The sweet shop was the front room and sometimes he would make wonderful malted milks for the family with the machines there.
He was an ambulance driver for Milwaukee County. He sold shoes and also owned two bicycle shops and a stamp store. Moving was normal for the Anderson family and included time lived in: Milwaukee; Lodi; Saylesville (rural Waukesha); Riverside, CA; Tomah; Milwaukee (again); Long Beach and Westminster CA; and finally, La Farge.
Herbert enjoyed traveling and through the years he and Florine visited every state in the US except Hawaii and Alaska.
The first trips, back in the 1950s, were in the family car with a 9'x 9' umbrella tent in the trunk. Through the years the tent was replaced by camping trailers and RVs.
In retirement, when not on the road, he used his wood working equipment and did leather crafts.
