James Franklin Steelman was the fourth child born to Mahala J Prince and Aaron David "Day" Steelman 3 April 1877 in Dent County, Missouri.

He married Ida Belle Hodges twice and together they had at least 5 children; Shelby Ray, Colleen May, Florence Mable, Captain Winnard Hodges and Jodie.

After his 2nd divorce from Ida, James married Cordelia Florence Fisher 17 Nov 1910 in Pulaski County, Arkansas. Florence and James had three children from this union, Laura Belle, Robert James and Mary Jo. After the death of Florence the two older children were fostered out and the baby Mary Jo was adopted to a family in Kentucky.

James last wife was Blanche Williams and they had one daughter Kathryn M.

James died 20 April 1943 in Orange County, California. He spent his last years living at the home of his daughter Colleen May in California.

Death Certicate stated body was being sent to Snow Lake, Desha County, Arkansas for buiral, Cemetery information not included. Living granddaughter confirms burial at Snow Lake but says the cemetery and most all the headstones have been destroyed
