From an article from Our Family History, Chapter Two, "Indian Territory, p. 38, published by The Lewis Publishing Co., 1901. In the article about Richard Morgan, it is said Richard Morgan and Mary May, "...have seven children, namely: Jay, deceased, Lillie, Minnie, Willis, Alice, Callie and Eva who are all under the parental roof."

Dr. Richard Morgan was the first husband of Betty May who later married Henry Emerson. Richard's last name was really Shelton, from a prominent family in Marion Co., TN. Richard studied medicine under his uncle, Dr. Richard Shelton, a surgeon in the Conf. Army for 4 years. Richard married in 1871 to a Mary Campbell. They had one child, a son named Neely. Not long after Neely was born, an ex-slave shot Richard's dog. Richard had his rifle as did the ex-slave and apparently they threatened each other. The ex-slave's wife jumped between the two to stop the fight just as Richard fired. The bullet killed the wife, her unborn baby, and traveled through her to kill her husband.
Richard went to Texas and changed his name to Morgan, his mother's maiden name. Mary Campbell divorced him. Later, he married Mary Elizabeth "Betty" May. He died in 1903 and then Betty married Henry Emerson.
