Dean Smith Phipps enlisted in the Marine Corps 13 January 1942 from Cherokee Iowa. Completed recruit training 10th Recruit Training Battalion MCB San Diego.
During March, 1942 assigned to H Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines, 2nd Marine Division, MCB Camp Elliott, CA.
1 July, 1942 embarked USS President Hayes (APA-20) at San Diego for movement overseas. 25 July, 1942 landing rehearsals at Koro, Fiji. 7 August, 1942 participated in combat operations D-Day Tulagi, Solomon Islands attached to the 1st Marine Division.
9 August-28 October, 1942 occupied Tulagi Island. 29 October, 1942 landed on Guadalcanal and participated in combat operations until 12 January, 1943.
31 January, 1943 embarked USS Monticello (AP-61). 6 February, 1943 arrived at Wellington, New Zealand based at Camp Russell as part of the 2nd Marine Division. 1 April, 1943 promoted to Private First Class.
30 October 1943 embarked USS Zeilin (APA-3)at Wellington. 7-14 November, 1943 landing rehearsals at Efate, New Hebrides. 20 November, 1943 landed Beach Red Two Tarawa D-Day and participated in combat operations until 24 November, 1943.
8 December, 1943 at Hilo Hawaii based at Camp Tarawa near Kamuela. 1 March, 1944 assigned to HQ Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines, 2nd Marine Division.
11 May, 1944 embarked an LST. 12-19 May, 1944 landing rehearsals in Hawaiian waters. 20-25 May, 1944 in Pearl Harbor. 8-11 June, 1944 at Eniwetok, Marshalls. 15 June, 1944 landed Beach Red Two Saipan D-Day and participated in combat operations Operations until Killed in Action 17, June, 1944.
Next of Kin: Parents, Mr John D and Mrs Inez L Phipps, Route one, Cherokee, Iowa.
Initially buried in the 2nd Marine Division Cemetery on Saipan.
1948 returned to US permanent burial in Cherokee, Iowa.
