John was the son of Epherom and Regina Strutt Stiwalt.He was a farmer.John was married to Viola Grayson Stiwalt and they had four children,two sons,one daughter and one adopted daughter Merry Lee Stiwalt Hollingshead. John and his wife Viola also took in Viola's brother Timmy Grayson after her mother Lillie passed away.Timmy had polio and they took care of him until he died at the age of 69.
