Herbert "Don" Mead, 90, of Osborne, Kan., died Friday, May 29, 2010, at the Parkview Care Center in Osborne. He was born in the Depot living quarters in Union, Colo., on July 4, 1919, to Martin and Margie (Penick) Mead. He was the youngest of four children. He attended a one-room schoolhouse at Union until the end of the sixth grade, when he moved to La Salle in March 1930. He finished school in La Salle and graduated from Greeley High School in 1936.
Don started to work for the Union Pacific Railroad in 1938 and continued until he retired in 1979. He married Bernice Winslow in 1941, and they spent 58 and a half years together until she passed away in July 2000.
Don is survived by two sons, Dennis (Wanda) of Minnesota and Ronald (Phyllis) of Nebraska; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and dear friends Bill and Billie Hinchley of Osborne.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Bernice; his parents; two brothers; a sister; and a granddaughter. Visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m. Thursday, June 3, 2010, at Adamson Chapel, 2000 47th Ave., Greeley, Colo., followed by a graveside service at 2:30 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to "Meals on Wheels" in care of Adamson Funeral & Cremation Services, 2000 47th Ave., Greeley, CO 80634.
