Harold Francis Early, 95, died Wednesday, April 18, 2007.
Harold was born October 2, 1911, in Eureka, to Margaret and John Early of Loleta; members of the pioneer Early family from Grizzly Bluff. He lived his early years in Loleta, attending Loleta Elementary School and Fortuna Union High School. He married Mildred Simmons in 1935 and they lived briefly in Ferndale and Eureka; then from 1938 they were residents of Fortuna. He was proud of his Irish heritage and attended the Annual Irish Picnic in Ferndale almost every year. He was a life-long Catholic and a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Fortuna.
Harold was a master mechanic, bus/truck driver and operating engineer; working for Chevrolet and Ford dealers in Fortuna, Associated Oil Co., Grunerts Plumbing, Kelly Concrete, California Tractor, Mercer-Fraser and finally the Maintenance Department of College of the Redwoods. He served 38 years as a volunteer in the Fortuna Fire Department including 2 years as Chief. Harold and Mildred managed the Skating Rink in Rohnert Park for the Fortuna Fire Department for over 22 years. He was a member of the Moose and Elks Lodges in Eureka and past member of the Carlotta Grange. He was always available to any friend that needed mechanical help. He enjoyed dancing and was active in several local dance clubs. He loved a good party and hosted his share of them. Upon retirement, Harold and Mildred enjoyed traveling the country in their RV until her death in 1991, after 56 years of marriage.
He is survived by his daughter, Pat Davis of Eureka; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Cathy Early of Pacific Grove; grandson, Tim and wife Kathy Caturegli and their sons Jared, Tyler, Andrew and Alex of Sunnyvale; granddaughter, Teresa Ramos and her husband Victor and her son Robert of Fresno; granddaughter, Patricia Shew and her son John and her husband Colman of Petaluma; granddaughter, Angela Caturegli of Eureka; grandson, Chris Caturegli of Everett, WA; granddaughter, Lisa and husband Chris Markkula and daughters Isabella and Molly; grandson, Sean Early and his four children David, Alexandra, Michael and Emily; sister, Virginia Berti of Fortuna and her daughters Peggy Colina, Marilyn Guerriero and Meredith Mata; brother, Edgar Early of Fortuna and his sons Ray, Dennis and Tommy Early; as well as numerous cousins of the Early Clan.
Pallbearers will be the Fortuna volunteer fire department. Honorary Pallbearers will be Harold’s 1st cousins Jim and Bob Bugbee.
The family would like to thank the staff and people at Renaissance, where Harold spent the last 10 months as a resident, for the loving care and comfort they gave him. He was happy there and especially enjoyed the music, the bus rides, all the outings and the food.
It was a great comfort to the family to know he was enjoying himself.
Rosary will be held Friday April 27, 2007, at 7:00 PM Goble’s Fortuna Mortuary in Fortuna, CA, with a Celebration Mass Saturday April 28, 2007, at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph’s Church in Fortuna, CA, with Burial at Table Bluff Catholic Cemetery, Loleta, CA.
Harold requested no flowers. Anyone wishing to make memorial contributions can do so to the Fortuna Fire Department or their favorite charity.
