Bernie Lee Richardson, Sr., 86, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 8:28 a.m. Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.

He was born June 3, 1924, in Mt. Vernon, to John Robert Richardson and Maggie Mae Dugan. He married Celia L. Baber on June 28, 1947, in Hot Springs, Ark.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Jimmy Bledsoe officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Bernie served in the United States Army with the 863rd Engineers during the Pacific Campaign in World War II. He worked as a Locomotive Engineer with the Illinois Central Railroad and was a lifetime honorary member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. He was also a member of Logan Street Baptist Church and a lifetime member of the VFW.

Bernie is survived by his wife, Celia Richardson of Mt. Vernon; a son, Bernie Lee Richardson, Jr., of Mt. Vernon; a grandson, David Lee Hicks-Richardson of Maryville; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

His parents; a sister, Cleora Britton; and brothers, Dwight, Kermit and Cassel Richardson, preceded him in death.
