Dr. Robert O. Gregg, a local pioneer in vascular surgery, died Sunday at Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Gregg, 83, was former chief of surgery at both University Hospital and Community-General Hospital, and was professor emeritus of surgery at the state University of New York Upstate Medical Center, now the SUNY Health Science Center.

Born in Newport, Dr. Gregg grew up in Elbridge and graduated with honors from Colgate University and the Syracuse University College of Medicine. At Colgate, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa.

He became a fellow in surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., in 1936, and earned a masters of science degree in surgery before the outbreak of World War II. During the war, he was assigned overseas to the 52nd General Hospital, where he served as chief of general surgery and held the rank of major.

Dr. Gregg returned to Syracuse in 1946 and began his own practice. He was named chief of surgery and chairman of the Department of Surgery at University Hospital, and was given the title of full professor from 1953 to 1956. He later became the first chief of surgery at Community-General Hospital.

Dr. Gregg retired from practice in 1981.

He was professor emeritus of surgery at State University of New York Upstate Medical Center, a member of the Onondaga County Medical Society, the Medical Society of the State of New York, the American Medical Association and the Upstate New York Vascular Society. He was also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and co-founder of the Central New York Surgical Society.

Dr. Gregg was named the 1983 Distinguished Alumnus of the Syracuse Medical College Alumni Association. The Robert O. Gregg Lectureship Endownment Fund was established at the Health Science Center several years ago as a tribute to his teaching career.

He was also a member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church and the National Chrysanthemum Society.

His wife, Frances MacKaig Gregg, died in 1978.

Surviving are his son, David, and several nephews.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Alban's Church. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Elbridge.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at St. Alban's Church.

Contributions may be made to St. Alban's Church or the Robert O. Gregg Lectureship Fund, UMC Foundations.
