Virginia Mahaley Thompson, an educator/artist died early in the morning on Feb. 10, 2011. She had battled heart disease and cancer for several years prior to her death.

Virginia was born in Frost, Texas, on Dec. 20, 1935. She was preceded in death by her mother, Lena Jewel McClure Mahaley; father, Orval Burns Mahaley; and infant son, Glen Todge Thompson.

Virginia is survived by her husband, Arthur Dudley Thompson; her children, Mahaley Odell Thompson, Eva-Marie Thompson-Lavigne and Andrew Adam Thompson; and her grandsons, Thomas Lavigne and Alexander Dudley Thompson.

Mrs. Thompson was Associate Professor Emeritus Texas Tech University College of Architecture, Coordinator of Architectural Delineation Program in Architecture from 1964 until her retirement in 1997. She received the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching, 1989, and served on the Texas Tech Faculty Senate from 1995-97.

Mrs. Thompson was President of the Lubbock Heritage Society 1996-97 after having served on the board from 1994. Her drawings of historical buildings have documented not only architectural styles, but the flavor of the times. Her drawings have appeared in shows at the Boston Architectural Center in Boston, MA; 'Architecture in Perspective' and 'Build Boston'; Dayton, Ohio, 'The Artist Views the City' exhibition; and Japan, traveling exhibit sponsored by the Japanese Renderers Perspectivists.

Mrs. Thompson is a charter member of American Society of Architectural Perspectivists (1986). Publications featuring her work include Architecture in Perspective: A Five-Year Retrospective of Award-Winning Illustrations, Van Nostrand-Reinhold, NY 1991; The World of Spirits and Ancestors in the Art of Western Sub-Saharan Africa, Elizabeth Sasser, Texas Tech University Press, 1995; Crit 23- The Journal of the AIAS; and Historic Homes and Buildings Tour, Lubbock, TX 1988-a brochure published by the Lubbock Heritage Society in cooperation with Lubbock Visitors and Convention Bureau and Lubbock Area Foundation Inc.

In 1999, Virginia Mahaley Thompson developed a symbolic watercolor for the Virginia Sowell Center for Research and Education in Visual Impairment, College of Education, TTU. This artwork was donated to the Center and is currently featured in the Center's publications and web site. Professor Thompson's art work sales established an endowed scholarship for a 'creative student' in the College of Architecture.
