The only son of Lawson and Catherine Barnett of Madison County, Virginia. Before the war he was a salesman with George C. Reed Wholesales Menswear Company in St. Louis, Missouri. He was 5'7" tall with fair complexion, gray eyes and light hair. He enlisted June 22, 1861 as Sgt. at Memphis, Tennessee into Co. E. 1st Missouri Infantry. He was promoted to 1st Sgt. at Baldwin, Mississippi on June 1, 1862 and to Sgt. Major on July 12, 1862. He was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi on July 4, 1863 and later exchanged. He was promoted to 2nd Lt. on December 12th, 1863. Promoted several times for gallant action on the battlefield. He was killed while charging the Federal Breastworks.
