Harry M. "Pete" Lee passed away November 11, 2010 in Belle Glade, FL. He was born in Lake Worth, FL on January 24, 1932. Pete was greatly loved by his family and friends. He was a master woodsman, a famous hunter, and a great storyteller. After homesteading on the Miami River, Pete's early pioneer family were among the first settlers to come down the Miami Canal in 1913 to homestead on Torry Island in Lake Okeechobee. Many from that first island community moved inland after the 1928 hurricane and later became the city of Belle Glade.
Pete was the youngest son of his wilderness family, and many know of him from reading Torry Island Boy of the Everglades. Written by his wife, Ann Tyler, the book tells of Pete's adventures as a young Everglades boy and his struggles as a wilderness man in a modern world. Jesse Lee, Pete's father, went from farming to cattle in the 1950's and Pete grew up as a Florida cowboy during the cattle industry's heyday in the Glades. He later worked for the State of Florida in the Department of Agriculture in the field of Animal Industry CID (Contagious, Infectious, Disease) control. Pete retired in 1995 after 38 years of service.
He is survived by his wife, Ann; his only daughter, Brenda Lee; his loving sons, Richard "Ricky" Lee, Kenneth Patrick "Pat" Lee, Pete Alan Lee, and two step sons, Billy and Troy Tyler. He has twelve grandchildren; one step grandson, and four great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held at Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ, Belle Glade, FL on Monday, November 15, 2010. Funeral services will be held at the same location on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at 10:00 AM. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the building fund of Mr. Lee's family church, the Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ, P.O. Box 882, Belle Glade, FL 33430.
