The first record of the Main family is John Maine (Mayn, Mayne, Main), b Devon, England, 1607. I believe he came to America with Thomas Weston's Wessagusset company ship Sparrow, in 1622, where he worked as a fisherman, off the banks at York, Me.

I have looked at the information about John. It says that he had two sons-in-law killed in an Native American Attack.
The only ones it could have been are Stephen and Nathan Premble- Rachel and Priscilla's husbands who were brothers. From what I can deduce Stephen and Nathan were killed in the Native American raid. Rachel married Joseph Carlisle and died giving birth to Joseph Jr. Priscilla married Joseph Carroll. Please note I have talked to a descendent of Rachel who verified this information. It has been a joy doing this research as I have been privileged to communicate with someone from each of my generations.

John Mayne, in a petition to Andros and the Council, 1687 says that 30 years since he had purchased lands at Maine's Point, North Yarmouth, York County, Maine, United States when Indians burned his home and killed two of his sons-in-law, He, his wife, and the rest of his family hardly escaped.

John Mayne came to the USA in 1622. He acquired land in what is now North York, Maine. Because he was the first settler to own the land, it was named after him. Mayne's Point, York, ME. It was located on the peninsula of the harbor. When the territory was separated from New York it was named after the the name of the Point there on York Bay. The province was named after Mayne's point. Proof is the original name of the province "Mayne" The state's name comes from the province. This means the state is named after the family. York county ME has this statement about the name, showing it did exist. "Mayne Point in Yarmouth was in this northern section of the original York County that became part of Cumberland County after the split."

All of his children were born here and two of his daughters lost their first husbands in an Indian raid that took place in the in the mid 1660s.

The name Maine was first suggested in about 1620 but nothing came of it. The state says it is named after Maine county, France but at this time France and England were in an almost continual state of war and virtually nothing was named after French places. Also, I have found no proof that the French county was ever spelled any way but Maine and the original map of the province shows Mayne as the name. It turns out that the headstone is that of his son john Mayn but he is buried here.
