A GRASS VALLEYAN KILLED IN AN EXPLOSION

A dispatch from Port Townsend states that an explosion of four tons of giant powder occurred in a magazine belonging to the Treadwell Mining Company on Douglass Island, The dispatches state that Wm. Cota, who was night watchman at the mine was killed.
Wm Cota and his brother Fred left here about the first of March. Cota was born and raised here, his folks living now on Rattlesnake Ravine. Deceased is a brother in law to Ross Cooley. No further particulars could be learned.


WINDOWS BROKEN TEN MILES AWAY
Port Townsend, Wash., April 28.—The teamer which arrived from Alaska last night, brings the information that on the night of April 16, the powder magazine of the Treadwell Mining Company on Douglas Island, containing four tons of dynamite, was destroyed by a terrific explosion. The watchman William Cota, of Spring (Grass) Valley, Cal., was blown to atoms. Every pane of glass within a radius of ten miles was broken, and a hole fifteen feet deep now marks the site of the magazine. The citizens of Juneau City, fifteen miles distant were greatly startled by the detonation. The property loss is unknown.
