In 1920, Walthall Moore became the first African American elected to the Missouri House of Representatives. During his time in office, he was instrumental in making Lincoln Institute an official state university, resulting in its name change to Lincoln University in 1921. While in Jefferson City, segregation laws prohibited Moore from staying in a hotel with his fellow legislators, so he instead stayed on Lincoln's campus or with local families.
