Long Illness Proves Fatal to Dr. Rodman
Final Rites Tomorrow at 1PM for Well-known Physician
Dr. Nathaniel Fulford Rodman, 63, a practicing physician in Norfolk for more than 30 years, died at the residence, 1326 West Princess Anne Road, yesterday at 3:30AM.
Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 1PM at the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments by the Rev. Peyton R. Williams, rector of Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church, and the Rev. Taylor Willis, retired rector.
Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
Dr. Rodman, who had been in failing health for 3 years, was born January 3, 1891, in Washington County, N.C. He was a son if the late Colonel William Blount Rodman, who besides living in Washington and Charlotte, N.C., had also resided in Norfolk.
A graduate of Oak Ridge Institute, the University of North Carolina and Jefferson Medical College, of Philadelphia, Penn.
Dr. Rodman completed his internship at the Presbyterian Hospital and the Children's Hospital in Philadelphia. Soon afterward he accepted a commission in the United States Medical Corps. and served for duration of World War I.
After the war, he began the practice of medicine as surgeon and physician in Norfolk, and served on the staffs of Norfolk General, DePaul and Sara Leigh Hospitals.
An active member of Norfolk County Medical Society, he served as chairman of many committees and was elected president in June 1943. In recognition of his varied service to the organization, he was made an honorary member after illness in 1951 terminated his active practice of medicine.
Dr. Rodman, who was accorded many honors for his research practice and civic contributions, was a communicant of Christ and St. Luke's Church, and had served as vestryman.
He was a member of the Medical Society of Virginia, a fellow of the Southeastern Surgical Congress, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Norfolk German Club.
In 1921, he married Miss Elizabeth Lee Jones, of Norfolk.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Dr. Nathaniel F. Rodman, Jr. Lt. Medical Corps, United States Naval Reserve; two daughters, Mrs. William Alfred Jones of Austin, Tex., and Miss Patricia Blount Rodman, a senior at the University of North Carolina; two granddaughters; one brother, William Blount Rodman, Jr. of Washington County, N.C.; and two sisters, Mrs. John Moseley Robinson of Charlotte, and Mrs. George Hughes Curtis, Jr. of Norfolk.
