Daniel was born in 1828 and grew to manhood and farmed in Barbour County, Alabama. He enlisted on March 15, 1862 at Clayton, Alabama. At time of his enlistment he was married and had 7 children. One of his sons, John J. Adkinson enlisted to serve with his father at age 17 in May of 1864. John was severely wounded in the jaw at the Battle of Atlanta, Georgia on July 25, 1864. He was sent to a Confederate Hospital and never saw his father again. He survived the war after enduring wounds, capture and imprisonment.
Daniel was mortally wounded at Franklin and died of his wounds in the Carnton Mansion hospital. He was 36 years old at death.

Son of William Nathan Adkinson (1806-1864) and Rebecca Elizabeth Reeder (1808-1865).
