Julia was a teacher and governess. She taught at Richmond High School (which later became the John Marshall High School) when the school opened in 1872. She was buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, VA along with her sisters Lucy Elizabeth Read and Caroline Dudley Read Pendleton.

The remains of Miss Julia P. Read, a former resident of Richmond, who died at the home of her sister Mrs. John A. (Emma) Berry, on December 15, at Detroit, Mich.,are expected to arrive here this morning at 8 o'clock. For years Miss Read was a teacher in the Richmond High School. Her death was due to infirmities of old age. Funeral services will be held at 11 o'clock this morning from Grace Street Presbyterian Church, and interment at Hollywood Cemetery.
Miss Read was the daughter of Jesse Read, former long term resident of Richmond, and prominent in Masonic circles. She was a sister in law of S. T. Pendleton, for many years the principle of Central School. Miss Read went to Detroit about eighteen months ago.
Hundreds of former students of the old Richmond High School will greive at the passing of Miss Read. When this institution first opened in 1872, she began her career as a teacher and for a period of twenty years she faithfully discharged her duties. As an instructor she excelled in teaching Latin, and by her patience, industry and skill she helped hundreds of students over the difficult road leading to a basic knowledge of that language.
The John Marshall High School Alumni Association has issued a request that all former pupils of Miss Read attend the funeral services.
