James Fletcher Roper was born in Dillon County, South Carolina. His parents were John Roper and Martha Capel. He married Elizabeth Bethea probably in South Carolina. She had been married before and had one daughter. James F and Elizabeth were parents of William F, John T, Martha, Harriet, Alice, James, Esther, and Emma Pope. From South Carolina they moved to Alabama and were shown on the 1850 Census in Choctaw, Alabama. They moved to Tyler County, Texas, where he was well established by the time of his death.

He died in Polk County, Texas, which was near where they lived in Tyler County, Texas. Family tradition says that he went to Polk County for supplies and was murdered on the way back. His body was disposed of and never found. Indeed, he died intestate at the age of 45 which indicated he did not anticipate his early demise.
